$1.6 Million in affordable housing coming to Charleston
November 22, 2024
Charleston County Council approved over a million dollars to go towards affordable housing initiatives. This is a part of their Affordable Housing Land Acquisition Grant Program, which is a pilot program that supports land acquisition grants for qualifying groups. This includes nonprofit and for-profit agencies with previous experiences in affordable house building. The county has partnered with the Charleston Redevelopment Corporation to help make this happen.
The four developments that were awarded funding Thursday night will be located in West Ashley, North Charleston, Murray Hill area, and Mount Pleasant.
The West Ashley affordable housing development will be located off Ashley Crossing Drive and is proposed to be a multifamily rental property with household incomes between 60 and 120 percent of the area median income. The county awarded $500,000 to the developer of this project.

Moody delivers more greenspace dollars for District 7
November 13, 2024
With help from the county, Charleston is moving forward with buying flood-prone property in the far reaches of West Ashley with the vision of creating a park that connects neighborhoods and existing greenspace.
The land is in County Councilman Brantley Moody's district. He considers this use of greenbelt funds a positive for a couple reasons: the possibility of more flood mitigation in the Church Creek basin and the potential to connect subdivisions like Springfield and Canterbury Woods to West Ashley Park by building bike and pedestrian paths.
"It's another win in District 7 that I’m proud of," Moody said.
